Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams: undoubtedly two of the most beloved and enduringly popular composers from the United Kingdom - and conductor Andrew Manze knows them like no other.

In 1938, Vaughan Williams set some famous verses from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice to music. The original composition of Serenade to Music, written for symphony orchestra and 16 specific British singers, soon proved difficult to replicate. Vaughan Williams thus provided a few alternatives himself, and was able to preserve the poetry that had so deeply moved in the original version, especially in the version for solo violin and orchestra. Following that, soloist Michael Barenboim will perform Robert Groslot's Violin Concerto, which showcases equally inventive music as his two English counterparts in this program.

The Enigma Variations, Land of Hope and Glory, the Cello Concerto: Edward Elgar wrote music that is now deeply engraved in the collective memory. Is it the way he was able to encompass his imagination and poetry in his music, or the emotional depth that you can scarcely pinpoint but can so deeply move the heart? Whatever his secret, he put his all into his monumental First Symphony.

Edward Elgar et Ralph Vaughan Williams sont sans nul doute deux des compositeurs britanniques les plus appréciés, aujourd’hui encore. Profondément ancrés dans la tradition musicale anglaise, tous deux s’attachent à traduire l’atmosphère caractéristique de leur pays et de son histoire. Le chef d’orchestre Andrew Manze est particulièrement familier de ce répertoire.

En 1938, en hommage au chef d’orchestre Sir Henry Wood, Ralph Vaughan Williams mit en musique quelques célèbres vers du Marchand de Venise de Shakespeare. La version originale de Serenade to Music, pour orchestre symphonique et 16 solistes vocaux, se révéla vite peu praticable. Vaughan Williams conçut donc des alternatives, réussissant à préserver, dans sa version pour violon seul et orchestre, la poésie qui marque si profondément dans les versions avec voix. Le soliste Michael Barenboim interprétera ensuite le Concerto pour violon de Robert Groslot, dont la musique est aussi inventive que celle de ses deux collègues anglais.

Les Variations Enigma, Land of Hope and Glory, le Concerto pour violoncelle : la musique d’Edward Elgar est restée gravée dans la mémoire collective. Est-ce pour la façon dont il sut rendre la fantaisie et la poésie, ou pour la profondeur émotionnelle qui touche au cœur ? Quel qu’en soit le secret, sa monumentale Première Symphonie réunit toutes ces caractéristiques ; la presse écrivit d’ailleurs à son sujet : « Pure beauté, sensibilité, tendre expression, une œuvre qui sera comprise par toute l’humanité. »

In 1938 zette Vaughan Williams enkele beroemde verzen uit Shakespeares The Merchant of Venice op muziek: Serenade to Music was een groots opgezette compositie, geschreven voor symfonisch orkest en 16 specifieke vocale solisten. Vaughan Williams maakte ook enkele alternatieve versies, waarin hij de poëzie die zo diep raakt in het origineel perfect weet te bewaren - en al zeker in de versie voor solo viool en orkest. Solist Michael Barenboim brengt daarna het Vioolconcert van Robert Groslot, die even inventieve muziek schrijft als zijn twee Engelse collega’s in dit programma.

De Enigma Variaties, Land of Hope and Glory, zijn Celloconcert: Edward Elgar schreef muziek die in het collectieve geheugen gegrift staat. Is het de manier waarop hij fantasie en poëzie wist te vatten, of de emotionele intensiteit waar je amper de vinger op kan leggen maar die je vol in het hart raakt? Wat zijn geheim ook was, hij bundelde al zijn kunnen in een monumentale Eerste Symfonie.
