The premiere of the oratorio Elijah took place in England (Birmingham, 1846). “Not a single thing of mine, at the first performance, went so well, was not accepted with such enthusiasm by both performers and listeners as this oratorio , ” Mendelssohn wrote to his brother.

The hero of the oratorio is the Old Testament prophet Elijah. He proclaims the Divine will to people, delivers from natural disasters, illnesses and death, defeats the priests of the god Baal, alien to the Jews, in a dispute, and, according to the biblical legend, ascends to heaven alive.

The oratorio is based on the Third and the beginning of the Fourth Book of Kings of the Old Testament. All episodes - plot and narrative - make up a composition similar to a series of opera "numbers". In two parts of the oratorio, they are plotted and semantically united into larger scenes. The main episodes of the first part are drought and famine, "The miraculous nourishment of Elijah", "The resurrection of the deceased son of the widow", "The meeting of Elijah with Ahab", "The shame of the prophets of Baal" and "Great rain in answer to Elijah's prayer". The second part depicts Elijah fleeing persecution to Mount Horeb ("Jezebel's Intention", "Elijah's Flight", "The Lord is in the Blow of a Still Wind"), and "The Taking of Elijah to Heaven". This part opens and is interspersed with the glorification of the Lord, and ends with the prophecy of the coming of the Messiah.

The beginning of the oratorio is unusual: instead of the traditional overture, Elijah's formidable recitative sounds against the background of a harsh chorale in the orchestra. The powerful image of the prophet appears before the listeners: “This year there will be neither dew nor rain,” he announces punishment for human sins.
