Years ago, Enoch Arden's ship was stranded on a desert island in a wild storm. Alone he vegetates, the hope that a ship will come by and save him is almost lost. That trip should have been his last: A successful trip would have been necessary to earn enough money to buy a house in the interior for his wife Annemarie and his little son that Annemarie dreamed of. Arden's thoughts keep returning to this farewell. His wife, full of foreboding, had tried in vain to dissuade her husband from his plan, but after one last loving dance, Arden went on board. His friend Klas should keep an eye on Annemarie and the son and help them in an emergency - a gamble, because Klas and Annemarie had been a couple before Arden appeared. In his loneliness, the shipwrecked man is tormented by jealous ideas: He sees Annemarie at Klas' side, love awakens again between the two. But they cannot marry because Arden has not yet been pronounced dead. A message in a bottle is found that suggests that he may have been shipwrecked. When nothing stands in the way of a marriage, they celebrate their bachelorette party exuberantly. Arden keeps a fire burning on his island for free - day in, day out. Still no ship sees the lost one. The strength to live for a reunion finally leaves him completely. But when Arden tries to put an end to his life, he thinks he sees a ship appear on the horizon. In his home village Nobody knows the homecomer any more where they are celebrating their son's first outing. When he reveals his identity to Klas, Arden learns the truth of his fears: Klas is married to Annemarie. First Arden wants to pounce on his friend, but then agrees to let Annemarie decide about her future. If she recognizes Arden, Klas wants to do without her. But Annemarie no longer sees her husband in the tanned old man, who is marked by privation, and passes him carelessly. Enoch Arden plunges into the sea. Klas wants to do without them.
