Between emotion and emancipation, between pathos and politics

It was 1977 when "Don't cry for me Argentina" stormed the charts as a hit single and became a number one hit in the UK, Ireland, Australia and the Netherlands, among other places. An award-winning double album followed, featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. In 1978 the stage version of »Evita« was released in London with Elaine Pagige in the title role. Released on Broadway in 1979, Evita received 1,567 performances and won multiple awards, including a Tony Award for Best Musical and a Grammy for the recording of the New York production. The legendary film starring Madonna followed in 1996. Since then, »Evita« has been telling the whole world about Eva Perón, who was far more than »just« the wife of Argentina's president.
