Plagued by a lack of money, Sir John Falstaff decides to go for love once again. He sends a love letter to Alice Ford and Meg Page, both married to wealthy merchants. The two friends soon find out that they have received an almost identical declaration of love and decide to get even with the charming womanizer. In the meantime, Falstaff's helpers Bardolfo and Pistola have informed Alice's jealous husband of their master's plans and he too is determined to put a heel on 'that charlatan'. All this leads to a crazy succession of disguises, in which the somewhat overconfident Falstaff is cheated time and time again. Mr Ford has also checked, for his daughter Nannetta takes advantage of the nightly masquerade to marry her beloved Fenton and not the headstrong doctor Caius, for whom she was intended by her father. Still, Ford and Falstaff both take the defeat sportingly, after all: 'He who laughs last, laughs best'.
