After years of ascetic life and plans to enter the clergy, as well as earnest assurances about the lack of interest in artificial and unattractive opera, the year 1859 brings a 180-degree turn in Charles Gounod's life. The premiere of the opera Faust , inspired by the drama of the father of European Romanticism - Johann Wolfgang Goethe - opens the door to an international career for the composer, and shifts his private life onto a completely new course.

Since the times of Goethe and Gounod, the great alchemist who makes a pact with the devil in the name of love has entered the panorama of the threads-topos of European culture. In the image of Faust, which has been under the eyelids for generations, has also been influenced by Poles - the iconic Mephisto is still the Polish bassist, Edward Reszke, the fame of the world opera houses of the 19th century, incl. Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera. It is said that Mephisto's equal is still difficult today ...

Po latach ascetycznego życia i planów wstąpienia do stanu duchownego, a także żarliwych zapewnień o braku zainteresowania sztuczną i mało atrakcyjną sztuką operową, rok 1859 przynosi w życiu Charlesa Gounoda zwrot o 180 stopni. Premiera opery Faust inspirowanej dramatem ojca romantyzmu europejskiego - Johanna Wolfganga Goethego - otwiera przed kompozytorem drzwi do międzynarodowej kariery, przestawia też jego prywatne życie na zupełnie nowe tory.

Wielki alchemik, który w imię miłości zawiera pakt z diabłem, wpisał się od czasów Goethego i Gounoda w panoramę wątków-toposów kultury europejskiej. Na obraz Fausta, który od pokoleń staje pod powiekami, wpływ mieli także Polacy - ikonicznym Mefistem pozostaje do dziś polski bas, Edward Reszke, sława światowych scen operowych XIX wieku, m.in. Covent Garden i Metropolitan Opera. O równego mu Mefista ponoć i dziś jest trudno...
