The first FIDELIO production of the 2020 calendar year will be followed with particular attention when it appears in the composer's home town. The Theater Bonn and the production team around director Volker Loesch go beyond Beethoven with Beethoven by charging FIDELIO with current stories of political prisoners in Turkey and their relatives!

Beethoven was the first truly political composer in music history, of which his FIDELIO is the most striking example. FIDELIO is about a man who tells the truth about the undemocratic conditions in his country and therefore disappears into prison. At the center of the opera is his wife Leonore, whose courage not only succeeds in freeing her beloved husband, but also in overthrowing the despot.

In FIDELIO Beethoven makes a musical-political experiment. His initial question is: What do you have to do to achieve the almost impossible? His answer: You have to risk your life and be prepared to endure an enormous ordeal. Leonore, alias Fidelio, succeeds in this and ultimately triggers a social upheaval. Hope is the main motif in every scene and Beethoven's music is an inspiration for the realization of utopias.

The model world of FIDELIO is one big prison. Turkey is the current European example of a state in which opponents of the regime are arrested and disappear in prison through arbitrary justice. With this staging, the release of Ahmet Altan, Hozan Canê, Gönül Örs, Soydan Akay and Selahattin Demirtaş is specifically advocated. Contemporary witnesses include Dogan Akhanli, who was in Turkish prisons three times and was awarded the Goethe Medal, and Süleyman Demirtaş, whose brother Selahattin is considered the most important political challenger to Turkish President Erdoğan and has been in the high-security wing for over three years for allegedly supporting terrorism unlawfully detained in Edirne, as judged by the European Court of Human Rights in 2018.
