Around 1792, an unknown lady disguised herself as a man in the French department of Loire and hired herself out as an assistant in the prison where her husband was imprisoned by the Jacobins. The feat succeeds: the woman can free her husband. This historically documented story impressed Ludwig van Beethoven so much that he made it the subject of his only opera. The successful struggle against tyranny and for freedom, as well as the power of conjugal love, inspired the composer to create one of his most powerful and emotional scores
