Gustav Mahler, Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinskij, Arturo Toscanini, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein and Kirill Petrenko are just some of the greats who have directed the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia since it first started in Italy in 1908, to deal exclusively with symphonic repertoire. A story of great names and great performances that today is in the hands of Antonio Pappano, musical director since 2005. Guest of the major international festivals and winner of numerous record awards, in recent years with the direction of Pappano he has reaffirmed his role among the orchestras international (also in 2020 nominated among the top ten according to BBC Music Magazine). Antonio Pappano conducts the final concert in Piazza Duomo again this year, the key event that closes the curtain of each edition of the Festival. Barbara Hannigan accompanies him on this evening as a soloist ofKnoxville: Summer of 1915 by Samuel Barber, a particularly beautiful and rarely performed work based on the James Agee novel A Death in the Family : A Child Lying in the Summer Grass, in Knoxville, Tennessee, looks up at the sky and lets the his thoughts chase the joys and sorrows of life. The suggestions from overseas, a theme that crosses the two worlds of 2022 programming, are also echoed in the second part of the concert with the performance of the “American” symphony par excellence, the Third by Aaron Copland.
