Flight, created by Jonathan Dove and April De Angelis, has become a contemporary classic. It has been performed in opera houses across the world since it’s premiere at Glyndebourne in 1998 and with good reason. It’s that rare gem – an outstanding score at impressive scale that is accessible at first hearing, and a libretto that combines sharply observed comedy with a moving study of relationships, aging, social division and the desire to connect that unites us all. In the everyday space of an airport departure lounge a group of passengers are stranded for the night; what unfolds is a story of humanity, cruelty, hilarity and surprise. At the centre of the storm is the character of the Refugee, based on the Iranian asylum seeker Mehran Karimi Nasseri. Nasseri spent 18 years airside at Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris upon his arrival and his story of isolation and displacement remains as relevant now as when he finally departed.
