And today, I say quietly: I should submit, be content, I cannot submit, cannot be content, still want to win, want everything – or nothing.

Deep black, dramatic lashes over light eyes, a steady gaze, paired with a no less charismatic voice that evokes the all-or-nothing, the uncompromising devotion to a life between failure and complete fulfillment in iconic lines. This is how Hildegard Knef is known in her songs, films and books. Her own biography contained quite a few twists and turns that brought her out of the war into the theater and in front of the film camera, to Hollywood and Broadway and back to Germany, stirred up the media press, shook her unstable health more than once and let them find happiness, lose it and then find it again.

In the middle of this changeable life, in 1975, the musical and spiritual portrait of the great German actress and singer begins. Then the experienced "Knef" meets the young "Hilde": two women, one person. They argue, interrupt each other in countless chansons, poems and passages from their memoirs, which bring to life Knef's path from the rubble days in Berlin to Broadway between work mania, boundless longing and constant restlessness.
