Placed under the direction of Jean-François Verdier, the Orchester Victor Hugo Franche Comté defines itself as a collective of musicians at the service of the public and of music and borrows its name from the giant of the 19th century writer, poet, politician, native of Besançon which marked Berlioz so much. An admiring reader of Victor Hugo, Berlioz set several of his poems to music, including La Captive, taken from the collection Les Orientales , on which he comments magnificently: this collection contains, according to him, “thousands of sublimities”. Around La Captive , it is with an entirely Berliozian program composed of rarities such as the cantata La Mort d'Orphée , that the Victor Hugo Orchestra makes its first appearance at the Berlioz Festival.

The first part will begin with the overture to Les Francs-Juges, planned for an unfinished opera, which according to its composer produced on the day of the concert "an effect of stupor and terror which is difficult to describe", and ends with Marguerite's vibrant aria "D'amour l'ardenteflame", taken from La Damnation de Faust . The second part makes us rediscover Berlioz's Shakespearean inspirations: the Overture to King Lear and Tristia , composed of three pieces for choir and orchestra including La Mort d'Ophélie and the Funeral March for the last scene of Hamlet, a little-known score of Berlioz and yet among the most striking, which has some surprises in store!
