Love and passion, political turmoil and personal betrayal, intrigue, revenge and murder are the ingredients of this baroque heroic opera.

Unfortunately, the damage caused to the opera house by the flood means that the production cannot take place in the Great Hall as planned. It will be made up for at a later date. It will be replaced by a season opening in a very special atmosphere that has never existed before. The workshops of the Wuppertal theaters open their doors to make the premiere of ›Julius Caesar‹ possible as a concert installation. On a 360-degree stage, singers and orchestras play on the same level as the audience and thus bring the music, which is interrupted by three reading blocks with prominent guests such as Harald Krassnitzer, Gudrun Landgrebe or Jürgen Tonkel, into a special proximity.

Handel uses a melody-driven, authentic expression of emotions and moods that put him far ahead of the musical emotions of his time. Because the meeting of the ancient figures Caesar, Cleopatra and Ptolemy only forms the historical background for a highly emotional drama about revenge and the seduction of political power holders. After the assassination of Pompey and Caesar's invasion of Egypt, the Ptolemaic rule there had feet of clay. Ptolemy's sister Cleopatra senses her chance for the throne and resorts to special means in a seduction scene that is unique in operatic literature. And the surviving relatives of the murdered Pompey are also plotting revenge...

After its premiere in London in 1724, when Handel's composition for the Royal Academy of Music was cast with the most brilliant voices of the time, the opera experienced a long series of performances before it fell somewhat into oblivion. For several decades, however, baroque fireworks have been able to continue this successful tradition.

Liebe und Leidenschaft, politische Wirren und  persönlicher Verrat, Intrige, Rache und Mord sind die Ingredienzien dieser barocken Heldenoper.

Leider sorgen die Schäden, die das Hochwasser am Opernhaus verursacht hat, dafür, dass die Inszenierung nicht wie geplant im Großen Saal stattfinden kann. Sie wird zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt nachgeholt. An ihre Stelle tritt eine Saisoneröffnung im ganz besonderen Ambiente, die es so noch nicht gegeben hat. Die Werkstätten der Wuppertaler Bühnen öffnen ihre Tore, um die Premiere von ›Julius Caesar‹ als Konzertinstallation möglich zu machen. Auf einer 360 Grad Bühne spielen Sänger_innen und Orchester auf einer Ebene mit dem Publikum und rücken die Musik, die von drei Lesungsblöcken mit prominenten Gäste wie Harald Krassnitzer, Gudrun Landgrebe oder Jürgen Tonkel unterbrochen wird, dadurch in eine besondere Nähe.

Händel verwendet dabei einen melodiengeführten, authentischen Gefühls- und Stimmungsausdruck, mit dem er den musikalischen Emotionen seiner Zeit weit voraus ist. Denn das Aufeinandertreffen der antiken Figuren Caesar, Cleopatra und Ptolemäus bildet nur die historische Folie für ein hochemotionales Drama um Rache und die Verführbarkeit politischer Machtinhaber_innen. Nach der Ermordung des Pompeius und Caesars Einmarsch in Ägypten steht die ptolemäische Herrschaft dort auf tönernen Füßen. Ptolemäus’ Schwester Cleopatra wittert ihre Chance auf den Thron und greift in einer Verführungsszene, die einmalig in der Opernliteratur ist, zu besonderen Mitteln. Und auch die Hinterbliebenen des ermordeten Pompeius sinnen auf Rache ...

Nach der Uraufführung in London 1724, bei der  Händels Komposition für die Royal Academy of Music mit den glänzendsten Stimmen der Zeit besetzt war, erlebte die Oper eine lange Aufführungsserie, bevor sie etwas in Vergessenheit geriet. Seit mehreren Jahrzehnten kann das barocke Feuerwerk aber nun wieder an diese Erfolgstradition anknüpfen.
