With "Glück auf" applies to the miner who sets off into the unknown, the wish to salvage the treasures of the earth and to return happily. Departure and expedition have always been an expression of the human thirst for knowledge and spirit of discovery. However, conquest and appropriation are the other side of the coin, which often leads to conflict with the freedom of the other person and inevitably to one's own experience of loss.

Veit-Jacob Walter takes up this primal human balancing act in a musical-scenic collage and bases his narrative on three works, each of which in its own way has a cyclical idea and thoughts of longing and losing.

The fatal chain of fascination and the desire to grasp the happiness of the moment and the object of desire with one's hands is expressed in Schönberg's opera The Happy Hand op. 18 and also runs through the story of the adventurer and lover Orfeo from Monteverdi's Favola in musica. On the other hand, Reich's minimalist composition Piano Phase is a work that culminates the evening musically and scenically to the point of dissolution.

Veit-Jacob Walther's entire story presents itself to the audience in impressive images and invites them to follow the cycle of human struggles between longing, conquering, failure and starting anew.
