The musical comedy, which won five prestigious Tony awards, is being presented in the Czech premiere! The authors of the libretto use peculiar ironies to present the audience with the completely absurd environment of a group of gamblers in contrast to the world of the Salvation Army and especially its sleeping members. And all this is a "mere" backdrop for true love stories ending with reformed sinners (?) and two (!) weddings. Frank Loesser is one of the best authors of American musical comedy of the 20th century, composing and writing his own song lyrics, but he is still completely unknown in the Czech environment. He alternates musical styles brilliantly, his language is very cultured, playful and funny both in music and in lyrics. In the musical comedy Love Bets ( Guys and Dolls , Broadway 1950) the author achieves absolute mastery. The libretto was written by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows based on stories by Damon Runyon. Guys and Dolls has been re-enacted many times on world stages, and in 1955 there was even a successful film of the same name, in which Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra played with gusto.
