For the new production of Aida only three musicians and one singer are available due to savings. Verdi's monumental plot was reduced to the lovers Aida and Radames, who are to be sung by a countertenor left out of the baroque fashion. But the three directors who cannot be fired have to be kept busy and strive for a convincing production. When it premiered on WDR in 1975, the Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös had no idea how topical his angry opera satire Radames , in which he mixed Verdi's melodies with the means of expression of New Music, would later be in view of the ever new austerity measures. Aida
's suicide turns into hara-kiridriven to the absurd after the clown scene of the same name by the Hungarian poet István Bálint. This satirized the samurai suicide of the famous artist Yukio Mishima by comparing it to the fairy tale The Princess and the Pea . Eötvös translated the text into Japanese and created his scene for a Japanese singer, a narrator, two bass clarinets and a saw. The intermingling, intermingling, juxtaposition and divergence of communication, together with social constraints, symbolized by the seven mattresses from the fairy tale, drive people to ritual death.
