The same material that later inspired Mozart to write his Italian opera seria »Idomeneo«, as a French tragédie lyrique: the god of the sea allows King Idoménée to survive a storm unscathed when he vows to sacrifice the first person he encounters on his home beach out of gratitude will meet. When the victim then turns out to be his son Idamante, Idoménée finds himself in an insoluble conflict between fatherly feelings, his duties as sovereign and religious obligations.

Derselbe Stoff, der Mozart später zu seiner italienischen Opera seria »Idomeneo« inspirierte, als französische Tragédie lyrique: Der Meeresgott lässt König Idoménée nur unbeschadet ein Unwetter überstehen, als dieser gelobt, aus Dankbarkeit den ersten Menschen zu opfern, auf den er am heimatlichen Strand treffen werde. Als sich das Opfer dann als sein Sohn Idamante herausstellt, gerät Idoménée in einen unlösbaren Widerstreit von Vatergefühlen, seinen Aufgaben als Souverän und religiöser Verpflichtung.
