Ein Sturm wütet vor Kreta und zwingt den aus dem trojanischen Krieg heimkehrenden König Idomeneo zu einem verhängnisvollen Versprechen an Neptun: Wenn der erzürnte Gott ihn sicher das Land erreichen ließe, werde er ihm den ersten Menschen opfern, dem er begegnen werde. Am Strand angekommen, trifft Idomeneo ausgerechnet auf seinen Sohn Idamante. Doch die unversöhnliche Götterwelt scheint auf die Erfüllung des Versprechens zu beharren.

Der Sturm, den Mozarts Musik so eindringlich heraufbeschwört, tobt nicht nur im Freien, sondern auch in allen Figuren der Oper. Ob Vater und Sohn, ob die beiden auswärtigen Königstöchter Ilia und Elettra, die nach dem traumatisierenden Krieg auf bessere Tage hoffen – sie alle sind Natur- wie Gefühlsgewalten hilflos ausgeliefert, was die Musik des 25-jährigen Mozarts eindringlich schildert. So eröffnet »Idomeneo«, der die totgeglaubte Gattung der Opera seria rundum erneuerte, die Reihe von Mozarts Opern der Reifezeit. 1781 als Auftragswerk für das vorzügliche Ensemble des Münchner Residenztheaters entstanden, konnte er für sein umfangreichstes und ambitioniertestes Werk musikalisch aus dem Vollen schöpfen. Mozarts Hoffnung, mit diesem Stück als Visitenkarte eine neue Anstellung zu finden und Salzburg verlassen zu können, erfüllte sich freilich nicht. Doch gerade dieser Ehrgeiz bedingte eine exzeptionelle Partitur: mit anspruchsvollen Arien, differenzierten Rollenporträts, einem virtuosen Orchesterpart und einigen großen Chorszenen, die zu den beeindruckendsten in Mozarts Schaffen gehören.

A storm rages off Crete and forces King Idomeneo, returning from the Trojan War, to make a fateful promise to Neptune: if the enraged god allows him to reach the land safely, he will sacrifice the first person he meets. Arriving at the beach, Idomeneo meets his son Idamante of all people. But the implacable world of the gods seems to insist on the fulfillment of the promise.

The storm that Mozart's music so forcefully conjures up rages not only outdoors, but also in all the characters of the opera. Whether father and son, whether the two foreign king's daughters Ilia and Elettra, who hope for better days after the traumatizing war - they are all helplessly at the mercy of the forces of nature and emotions, which the music of the 25-year-old Mozart vividly describes. Thus »Idomeneo«, which completely renewed the genre of opera seria, which was believed to be dead, opens the series of Mozart's operas of the mature period. Written in 1781 as a commission for the excellent ensemble of the Munich Residenz Theater, he was able to draw on unlimited musical resources for his most extensive and ambitious work. Mozart's hope of finding a new job and being able to leave Salzburg with this piece as a calling card was of course not fulfilled. But it was precisely this ambition that called for an exceptional score: with demanding arias, differentiated portrayals of roles, a virtuoso orchestral part and some large choral scenes that are among the most impressive in Mozart's oeuvre.
