Gioacchino Rossini's comic opera The Barber of Seville (1792-1868) is one of the most famous in its genre and has remained not only in the current repertoire of world opera for over two hundred years, but also enjoys the constant affection of listeners who get real aesthetic pleasure while bathing. virtuoso, full of beauty of Italian melodies music, emotionally empathizing with the heroes of the opera, who repeatedly find themselves in rather bizarre situations, outlined by the witty plot of the libretto, based on the immortal comedy of French playwright Pierre Beaumarchais.

The impetus for the emergence of this work was quite common situation in contemporary Italian art: G. Rossini, still quite young and can be said known only in Rome, was commissioned to write an opera for the traditional Roman Carnival. The composer sought to find a special libretto for a new work. And did not find, but spent a lot of time. All that he offered was rejected by Austrian censorship, and mythical and heroic plots did not find the support of the impresario. And then G. Rossini decides to turn to the work of P. Beaumarchais, despite the fact that the well-known plot of the clever Figaro has been written many operas, including G. Paisiello (1782). The young composer took advantage of the courtesy of one of the most popular Italian composers at the time, author of more than a hundred operas by G. Paisiello, who took a libretto by Cesar Sterbini from his opera, which has been quite successful for decades. Trying to keep up with the contract time of the premiere, G. Rossini hastily began writing his new opera "Almaviva, or Vain Caution." The work lasted a little over two weeks. To have time to submit the work in time, the author uses excerpts from his early works, including the overture, which he wrote for the opera "Aurelian in Palmyra", later used in the opera "Elizabeth, Queen of England". The premiere of the opera entitled "Almaviva, or Vain Caution" took place under the direction of the author himself on February 20, 1816 at the Argentine Theater in Rome. And it was a complete failure. This was facilitated by a number of unpleasant coincidences during the play: Don Basilio was injured on stage during a fall, Almaviva tore a string while performing a serenade, and at some point a cat came on stage… But the second performance took place in a crowded hall, on the streets of Rome, which immediately raised the status of the play to a notable artistic event. J. Paisiello died three months after Rossini's premiere, not realizing that the opera of his protégé and creative successor would overshadow all others based on the works of P. Beaumarchais, except for the opera "The Wedding of Figaro" V.-A. Mozart. Often these operas simultaneously adorn the theater's repertoire, alternating with their performances.

The creative biography of G. Rossini fascinates with its unusualness and fullness. Born into the artistic family of a musician and actress, he was in the turbulent cycle of Italian musical life from childhood; sang in church choirs, studied vocals and played various instruments; violin, viola, harpsichord, cello, acted as conductor and choir regent. And all this happened before the age of fourteen, when the young maestro was elected a member of the Bologna Academy of Music. At this time he wrote two symphonies, five string quartets, cantata. And his first opera "Demetrio and Polibno" (staged in 1812 in Rome). At the time of the creation of The Barber of Seville, G. Rossini was already the author of five operas! All of them have survived to our time, but as a fact of his personal biography. True musical success and world fame awaited the composer after the premiere of "The Barber of Seville". It is believed that this work completed the formation of the Italian opera buff as a separate musical and stage genre in all formal technical requirements: the proportionality of poetic arias and textual dialogues, choral recitatives and expressive comic mise-en-scenes. G. Rossini's opera, full of natural liveliness and dynamic development of events, subtle sarcasm and stormy musical humor, quickly gained popularity. And not only in Italy, thirsty for good opera music, but also reached beyond his homeland. In 1821 Rossini's work was performed by the Italian Opera Troupe in Odessa, and a year later in St. Petersburg, in 1825 in New York. From the middle of the XIX century. "The Barber of Seville" became one of the most performed works of the Italian repertoire. The opera is staged by the most famous conductors Vaclav Suk, Boris Khaikin, A. Melik-Pashayev, Yevgeny Svetlanov, Stepan Turchak, parts from "The Barber of Seville" decorated the repertoire of Polina Viardo, Maria Callas, Tito Gobli, Ivan Gobi, Feigi Reyga Maigro Reigro , Oscar Kamionsky, Yuri Mazurko, Sergei Lemeshev and others.

Gioacchino Rossini became one of the most important composers in Europe during his lifetime. Almost all operas written after the "Barber of Seville". had considerable success, although some eventually disappeared from the active repertoire palette given the latest aesthetic contexts in the European music space. However, from time to time theaters turn to the works of the famous Italian composer, re-reading his slightly forgotten, but very interesting and talented in the richness of musical melodies operas that once dominated the best theaters in Europe and were considered top in opera at the time: "Magpie-thief "," Italian in Algeria "," Semiramis "," Journey to Reims "," Wilhelm Tel ".

In his later life, after falling seriously ill, G. Rossini moved away from great musical forms and focused mainly on instrumental and religious music. He writes choirs, masses, romances, chamber works.
