Testament musical de Monterverdi, Le Couronnement de Poppée est aussi le premier opéra qui chante la toute-puissance de l’Amour en unissant dans une alchimie complexe le théâtre, le chant et la musique. Une fresque historique et poétique, une mosaïque de scènes où s’entremêlent le sublime et le trivial, où rien ne peut arrêter les intrigues et le triomphe du couple adultère. Une ronde vertigineuse de désirs et d’ambitions où, dans une Rome de violences et de passions, Néron conduit Poppée vers le trône impérial.

Collaboration between the Académie de l'Opéra national de Paris and the Athénée , Il Nerone or Le Coronnement de Poppée , is performed by artists in residence at the Academy. Each season, this institution welcomes and trains around thirty young opera professionals from all over the world, singers, musicians, singers and directors.

1647: a troop of Venetian singers is in Paris, called by Mazarin to give the Orfeo de Rossi there. A few weeks after their arrival, one of the singers of the troop informed his protector in Italy that "the preparation of Orfeo having suffered from multiple delays, the troop will finally present, unexpectedly, Il Nerone.". This Nerone was none other than… The Coronation of Poppea . But is this masterpiece - Monteverdi's last opera - the work we know, this most famous baroque opera today? Powerful work by its dramatic intensity, musical testament of the Venetian maestro whose pen is turned towards the future, this Nerone is revisited here by the Dumestre / Françon tandem, which wishes to put the artists of the Academy of the Paris Opera at the heart of a project that reconnects with the original Venetian score.
