With Longborough Festival Opera's 2020 season cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown, our fantastic cast of Monteverdi's 'The Return of Ulysses' have instead been working on a recording of the choral prayers to the gods, from Act 3 of the opera. This has been set to a new short film by illustrator and animator Amber Cooper-Davies, who was previously shortlisted by the AOI World Illustration Awards.

Penelope is besieged by nefarious suitors, keen to declare Ulysses dead and seize power over Ithaka. Ulysses finally arrives home, in disguise – and Penelope promises to accept the man who can string Ulysses’ great bow.

Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (The Return of Ulysses to his Homeland) is Monteverdi’s beautiful, compassionate drama of homecoming. Robert Howarth conducts early music specialists La Serenissima; and Longborough’s Artistic Director Polly Graham makes her festival debut.
