In his sublime and refined staging in the form of a mental space, Robert Carsen offers Gluck's lyrical tragedy a setting worthy of the work.

In Iphigénie en Aulide (1774), Gluck triumphed at the Court of Marie-Antoinette. Five years later, he resumed the mythological character for another opera: Iphigénie en Tauride. While in the first, Agamemnon's daughter is sacrificed to the gods, in the second, it is she who must consider sacrificing her own brother Orestes! Under Gluck's pen, ancient tragedy becomes a new milestone in his lyrical reform aimed at purging opera of its excesses. Overture in the form of a storm, moving airs, balance of speech and music explain the immediate success of this score which will open the way to romantics like Berlioz or Wagner. A connoisseur of Gluck, Robert Carsen restores all its power to this tragedy, illuminated by the soprano Hélène Carpentier who will make her debut in this great role.
