"I felt a funeral in my brain" by Alyssa Weinberg

ISOLA invites you to explore questions of identity, the many facets of self, distorted perceptions of time, and the journey of healing through a poetic, non-linear series of vignettes. This enchanting piece, created by composer Alyssa Weinberg and poet J. Mae Barizo, takes its name from the word Isola, which can mean isolation, an island, or even the Pacific Ocean archipelago, where Barizo's parents immigrated from just before her birth. 

Handwritten by Barizo amidst the Appalachian landscapes in 2020, the text weaves a tapestry of distorted perceptions, both inner and outer, all seen through the prism of isolation.

Composer Alyssa Weinberg, known for her unique sonic palettes and texture, transforms these emotions into a transcendent operatic experience. Her work is a playground of perception, often bending form to create surreal, dreamlike scenarios. Critics have described her music as "quite literally stunning," (Chicago Tribune) and her compositions have been celebrated by artists and ensembles worldwide.
