Handel's oratorio Israel in Egypt can be called a “baroque blockbuster” without exaggeration. His setting of the Old Testament report on the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt could not be more vivid. At the latest when the famous plagues are discussed, it becomes clear why Handel is considered one of the best playwrights of all time. You don't even need the text of the oratorio to know exactly what the music is about. René Jacobs is the ideal conductor for this composition. With his dramaturgical sensitivity, his meticulous research and his sense of timing, he can show himself to be the director of such an epic.
