The libretto of the rock opera Juno and Avos is based on the poem Avos! By Andrey Voznesensky. Based, in turn, on real historical events of the 19th century: the journey of the Russian diplomat Nikolai Petrovich Rezanov to America, where he was destined to meet the young daughter of the commandant of San Francisco, Maria Concepcion Arguello (Conchita). The Russian traveler and the first beauty of California fell in love with each other; alas, their joint happiness was brief, almost fleeting. The circumstances forced Rezanov to leave for Russia; illness and death prevented him from returning to his beloved.
Despite the real historical background of the plot, "Juno ..." is not a documentary chronicle, as warned by the author of the poem, Andrei Voznesensky: “The author is not so consumed by conceit and frivolity to portray real faces based on scant information about them and offend them with approximation. Their images, like their names, are just a capricious echo of the well-known destinies. " Thanks to the creative rethinking of the images and destinies of the main characters, the creators of the rock opera were born a unique creation that instantly won the hearts of the public not only in Russia, but also in many countries of the world.
"Juno" and "Avos" are the names of two ships on which Rezanov's expedition set off for the shores of America. However, the word “maybe” in the name of a rock opera has a peculiar ironic connotation, indirectly expressing both a trait of the Russian character, and, in connection with it, the realities of Russian reality: “Our faith is more accurate than calculation, we are taken out by“ Perhaps ”... According to A. Voznesensky , "Rybnikov wrote ... music in which he orchestrated the history of Russia, eternal and present, with fascination." Despite the fact that the main characters are not destined to reunite in earthly life, the solemn hymn of Love with a capital letter sounds in the finale of the opera - Love for which there is no distance and time.
First presented to the public on July 9, 1981 on the stage of the famous "Lenkom", the rock opera was a resounding success with the audience. The gramophone record, released a little later by the Melodiya company, was sold in millions of copies. And songs from "Juno ...", such as "I will never forget you" or "White rosehip", instantly "went to the people" and are still very popular today.
In Mari El, Rybnikov's and Voznesensky's musical and dramatic masterpiece is staged for the first time. The staging of the legendary rock opera at the Mari Opera and Ballet Theater became possible thanks to the wide technical and creative capabilities of the theater: modern sound and lighting equipment, rich creative potential of the troupe: young artists and recognized stage masters; the original stage concept of director Nadezhda Repyeva and set designer Boris Golodnitsky.
