Kazushi Ono, musical director of La Monnaie from 2002 to 2008, returns to Brussels as guest conductor for the anniversary of our orchestra. He will lead a program highlighting some key moments from the past of our house. In 1881, Jules Massenet preferred that the creation of his new opera Hérodiade take place in Brussels rather than in Paris , which gave a serious boost to the influence of our Theater! La Monnaie flourished particularly after 1900, when the director Maurice Kufferath opened his doors to the modern repertoire, with among others Salomeby Richard Strauss (sung in French). If, historically, only one generation separates Hérodiade and Salomé, the musical universes in which Massenet and Strauss develop their characters are light years away from each other. The biblical story set to music finds a worthy secular counterpart in Sergei Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony .
