Kent Nagano conducts Abrahamsen's The Snow Queen: Snedronningen Abrahamsen

Seemingly classic story

In 2019 Abrahamsen The Snow Queen its premiere in Munich, an opera based on Andersen's fairy tale about the children Kay and Gerda, who are separated from each other by the evil Snow Queen but who will eventually find each other again. It seems like a classic tale of the eternal struggle between good and evil. The Queen kidnaps Kay after the splinters of a devilish mirror have left him cold and indifferent. Gerda finally delivers him from evil.



Snow Queen in a new light

However, Abrahamsen places the story in a different light. With him, the Snow Queen is closer to Sarastro from Mozart's Magic Flute, the priest who leads Tamino and Pamina through an initiation ritual to their purification. She is also a formative force, and it is no coincidence that he has her part sung by a bass-baritone. In this way, that complex fairy tale becomes a story about love, the loss of innocence and the road to adulthood.
