The French of the 19th century called the Roma people who they believed came from Bohemia, a region in the Czech Republic, bohemians. Their unconventional way of life, non-attachment to the possession of material goods, life on the street "from today to tomorrow", dedication to spirituality, art, primarily music, all of this was labeled as bohemian and caused the outrage of moral European snobs, citizens and small townspeople of that era. When artists, partly by force of circumstances and partly by their own choice, began to practice a similar lifestyle, along with the prejudices of "normal" people, they also inherited the label - bohemians. Henry Murger, whose novel La Boheme is based on scenes from the artistic life  Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica wrote the libretto, and Giacomo Puccini composed the opera, in the preface of his novel he writes that he wanted to shed a more adequate light on those who lead a bohemian life and "whom the Puritans of the world know too little, whom the Puritan arts vilify, who are attacked by all the timid and jealous mediocrity." Murger elevates bohemians to the pedestal of uncompromising and playful fighters for truth and beauty. He calls them dreamers. In fact, he calls US dreamers. All of us who are preparing this play for you are a bit like the lyrical characters from this opera. We sing, dance, act, as fiercely as we can, so as not to distract you from everything that is not love.

Francuzi 19. stoljeća boemima su zvali Rome za koje su vjerovali da dolaze iz Bohemije, regije u Češkoj. Njihov nekonvencionalan način života, nevezanost za posjedovanje materijalnih dobara, život na ulici „od danas do sutra“,  posvećenost duhovnosti, umjetnosti, prvenstveno glazbi, sve to etiketirano je kao boemština i izazivalo je zgražanje ćudorednih europskih snobova, građana i malograđana toga doba. Kada su umjetnici, što silom prilika, a što vlastitim odabirom počeli prakticirati sličan životni stil, uz predrasude „normalnih“ ljudi, naslijedili su i etiketu – boemi.  Henry Murger, po čijem su romanu La Boheme, prizori iz umjetničkog života Giuseppe Giacosa i Luigi Illica napisali libretto, a Giacomo Puccini skladao operu, u predgovoru svog romana piše kako je želio baciti adekvatnije svijetlo na one koji vode boemski život i „koje puritanci svijeta premalo poznaju, koje puritanske umjetnosti ozloglašavaju, koje napadaju svi plašljivi i ljubomorni mediokriteti.“ Murger uzdiže boeme na pijedestal beskompromisnih i zaigranih boraca za istinu i ljepotu. Naziva ih sanjarima. Zapravo, naziva NAS sanjarima. Svi mi koji vam pripremamo ovu predstavu pomalo smo nalik na lirske persone iz ove opere. Pjevamo, plešemo, glumimo, najžešće što možemo, ne bismo li vam skrenuli pažnju sa svega onoga što nije ljubav.
