Gustavo Dudamel conducts the Paris Opera Orchestra and Choir in a performance of Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème. Recorded at the Opéra National de Paris in 2017 and directed by Claus Guth. Among the soloists are Nicole Car, Aida Garifullina Atalla Ayan and Artur Ruciński. La Bohème premiered in 1896 at the Teatro Regio in Italy. The opera's libretto focuses on the relationship between Rodolfo and Mimì. When young poet Rodolfo meets seamstress Mimì, it's love at first sight. But faced by the cruel realities of poverty and ill health, will the flame that burns between them flicker and die? Or will the timeless strength of their youthful passion withstand every trial and tribulation that life can throw at them?

During the winter of 2017, the Opéra de Paris took audiences to the moon! Rediscover Puccini's timeless opera La Bohème in this fascinating production featuring Nicole Car as Mimi and Maestro Gustavo Dudamel as music director. In his inventive staging, Claus Guth sets the story in a dystopian future.

Premiered in Turin in 1896, Puccini's La Bohème was destined to become one of the most frequently performed operas of the repertoire. Yet at the time of its premiere, La Bohème was one of a wave of revolutionary new operas that brought the lives of common people to the opera stage. As Puccini himself explained, he put "great sorrow in little souls," and in doing so created a new style called verismo. The opera's now-familiar tale follows two young artists, Rodolfo and Marcello, as they negotiate their complicated lives and respective love affairs with the seamstress Mimi and the extravagant singer Musetta.

Stage director Claus Guth and musical director Gustavo Dudamel's 2017 production of La Bohème was a highlight of the Opéra Bastille's 2017/2018 season. As Mimi, Nicole Car led renowned colleagues Aida Garifullina (Musetta), Atalla Ayan (Rodolfo), Artur Ruciński (Marcello), Alessio Arduini (Schaunard), and Roberto Tagliavini (Colline). They are joined by the celebrated Orchestra and Choirs of the Opéra national de Paris.

No one better described the half-starved, struggling artists than the writer in his Scènes de la Vie de Bohème: artists ready to burn a manuscript to try to keep warm yet,in an era of triumphant bourgeois materialism, dreaming of another existence. Taking up these scenes of Bohemian life, Puccini offers us a heart-breaking love story and some of the most beautiful music in the history of opera in the story of the poet Rodolfo and fragile Mimi. The staging of this new production has been entrusted to Claus Guth who sets the drama in a future devoid of hope in which love and art become the sole means of transcendence.
