The playful melodrama La Cenerentola, or goodness in triumph , was written by Rossini in just three weeks and, after the premiere in Rome in 1817, it was one of his most represented works. The story is that of the famous Cendrillonby Perrault, with some changes made by the librettist Jacopo Ferretti: the stepmother, for example, is replaced by a more funny and grumpy Don Magnifico; instead of the fairy we find the philosopher Alidoro, while instead of the crystal slipper appears a "smaniglio", a bracelet that Cinderella leaves to her beloved, before running away from the palace and returning to her stepfather's house without being discovered. Obviously the happy ending is also respected by Rossini: Cinderella, now a princess, forgives her stepsisters and her stepfather who, moved, embrace her and recognize that any throne is little compared to her goodness.

The opera, the latest on the bill for the 2018 Opera Season in Padua, is a co-production with the Municipality of Bassano del Grappa - Opera Festival.

The title will pay homage to Lucia Valentini Terrani, a great Rossinian voice, remembered as one of the best interpreters of this opera twenty years after her death. In 1978 she played the role of Angelina in Cinderella in a legendary edition at the Teatro Verdi in Padua, directed by Alberto Zedda.
