Aux armes! Aux armes! - To the weapons! The performance of Daniel Auber's  La muette de Portici on August 25, 1830 at the La Monnaie opera house in Brussels so upset the audience that they rose, stormed out of the theater and started a revolution that led to the founding of the Belgian state. Two years earlier, Auber had co-founded the monumental genre of grand opéra with his work, which was to make music theater the culmination of social discourse. And yet  The Mute blasts from PorticiPushing the limits of opera with a protagonist who does not sing a single note, this form of breathtaking singing, overwhelming mass choruses, opulence and glamour, the mute Fennella finds herself in the midst of the turmoil of the Spanish occupation of Naples in the 17th century. She publicly exposes the son of the Spanish viceroy Alphonse as her seducer and flees to her brother Masaniello, the leader of the rebellion against the occupying power. A fatal civil war unfolds in a plot almost ready for film, which in the opera ends with the eruption of Vesuvius as the final scene. In 1830, Auber's opera music became the soundtrack of the bourgeois emancipation movement, not only in Belgium but throughout Europe – including in Kassel, where the citizens' guard took to the streets to the sounds of the overture. The director Paul-Georg Dittrich traces the myth of this real political and aesthetic revolution at the Staatstheater Kassel. With his multiple award-winning works, for which he has already been nominated twice for the German theater prize DER FAUST, Dittrich stands for poetic storytelling as well as for a contemporary symbiosis between music and spoken theatre, for experimental forms of play and unconventional spatial theater settings.
