The plot of the opera La traviata was taken from Alexandre Dumas son's novel The Lady of the Camellias. The possibility of creating an opera based on this literary work arose with Giuseppe Verdi almost immediately after the publication of the novel in 1848. Verdi was at her premiere and finally confirmed his decision to write an opera. He found in Dumas a theme close to himself - the tragedy of a woman's fate ruined by bourgeois society.

The theme of the opera caused a heated controversy: the modern plot, costumes, and hairstyles were very unusual for the public of the 19th century. But the most unexpected thing was that for the first time on the opera stage as the main character, portrayed with undisguised sympathy, a “fallen woman” appeared (a circumstance specially emphasized by Verdi in the title of the opera, because this is how the Italian word “traviata” is translated). Perhaps this novelty was the main reason for the scandalous failure of the premiere.

In terms of genre, "La Traviata" is one of the first examples of a lyric-psychological opera. The routine and intimacy of the plot led Verdi to abandon the heroic monumentality, theatrical spectacle, showiness that distinguished his first operatic works. This is the composer's most "quiet" chamber opera.

 

The play was first performed on March 6, 1853 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice.

The opera "La Traviata" appeared in the repertoire of the theater almost from the very beginning of its opening, but now the public is presented with an updated version, which was created in the KGATOB named after. Abai in 2016.

"La Traviata" is an opera of great style, - Vyacheslav Okunev, the production designer of the play, who was already invited to the eighth performance at the GATOB im. Abai - that's why everything in it - the costumes, the scenery, and the interior - is done in detail and as accurately as possible. We wanted the audience to fall in love with the opera with all their heart and taste all its charms after visiting this performance, because opera is a genre that can stop time, slow it down. In the opera, a person relaxes and gets almost a museum feeling: in the evening, time stops, a huge orchestra plays especially for you, luxurious scenery changes and singers with brilliant vocal abilities sing, and this is a very expensive feeling.”
