En 1908, Gustav Mahler est au plus mal : sa fille vient de mourir, sa santé se détériore, rivalités politiques et antisémitisme l’ont forcé à démissionner de son poste à l’Opéra de Vienne…

Dans cette profonde détresse, l’illumination va lui venir d’Asie, avec des poèmes de la dynastie Tang adaptés en allemand par Hans Bethge sous le titre La Flûte chinoise.

Tour à tour enivrés ou contemplatifs, ils offrent à Mahler de nouvelles façons de dire la mélancolie, de nouvelles images d’errance, comme celle du poète Li Bai, clochard céleste qui mourut, dit-on, en voulant cueillir dans l’eau un reflet de lune…
Œuvre testamentaire, Le Chant de la Terre opère la fusion entre lieder et symphonie.

Devenue un classique, cette « symphonie de chant » sera présentée par Le Balcon dans sa version pour orchestre de chambre, transcription laissée inachevée en 1920 par Schönberg et achevée en 1983 par le musicologue Rainer Riehn.

Dans cette aventure sonore, l’ensemble enrôlera des forces lyriques considérables : un ténor qui continue de monter très haut – Kevin Amiel – et Stéphane Degout, l’un des plus grands barytons actuels.

In 1908, Gustav Mahler was at his worst: his daughter had just died, his health was deteriorating, political rivalries and anti-Semitism forced him to resign from his post at the Vienna Opera...

In this deep distress, enlightenment will come to him from Asia, with poems from the Tang dynasty adapted into German by Hans Bethge under the title The Chinese Flute.

Alternately intoxicated or contemplative, they offer Mahler new ways of expressing melancholy, new images of wandering, like that of the poet Li Bai, a celestial tramp who died, it is said, trying to pick a reflection of the moon…
A testamentary work, Le Chant de la Terre merges lieder and symphony.

Having become a classic, this “singing symphony” will be presented by Le Balcon in its version for chamber orchestra, a transcription left unfinished in 1920 by Schönberg and completed in 1983 by the musicologist Rainer Riehn.

In this sound adventure, the ensemble will enlist considerable lyrical forces: a tenor who continues to rise very high – Kevin Amiel – and Stéphane Degout, one of today's greatest baritones.
