Die Hochzeit des Figaro – Susanna und Figaro | Volksoper Wien

With Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro", one of the core pieces of our house's repertoire returns to the programme. Marco Arturo Marelli staged the work as part of his Da Ponte cycle at the Volksoper in 1989. In 2012 he brought it out again, so to speak, with the finishing touches. The stage designed by the director himself is noble and simple, while Dagmar Niefind's historicizing costumes are elegant and unobtrusive. Views and attention remain undisguised on the characters and, even more than 235 years after its creation, on the topicality of the work: it is Susanna's cleverness that prevents catastrophes caused by emotions, sees through all schemes and subtly thwarts them. The almost still serf servant is superior to the aristocratic rule. Was it a risk at the time of the premiere to show this idea publicly, the questioning of existing power structures has lost none of its urgency. Verbal jokes and situational comedy in opera have been entertaining “perennials” for centuries anyway.
