A story between love and betrayal, revenge and remorse, atmospheric, eerie natural scenes and the ghostly singing of lost souls: Alphonse Karr's romantic story "Les Willis", in which young women transform into avenging ghosts and which is generally known as the basis of the successful ballet "Giselle". achieved, inspired Giacomo Puccini to his first opera ever. Even as a young composer, Puccini demonstrated his great dramatic and melodic talent here and created a surprising piece of music theater in which symphonic orchestral passages alternate with large solo scenes and choral tableaux. With »Le Villi«, the NTM continues the tradition of concert opera performances and at the same time makes a new beginning: In the first interim season, Puccini's opera will be performed in the Rosengarten in Mannheim under the direction of the new Kapellmeister Salvatore Percacciolo. Look forward to gripping role portraits by Astrid Kessler, Irakli Kakhidze and Evez Abdulla as well as the orchestra and opera choir of the National Theater.

Eine Geschichte zwischen Liebe und Verrat, Rache und Reue, stimmungsvoll schaurigen Naturszenerien und dem geisterhaften Gesang verirrter Seelen: Alphonse Karrs romantische Erzählung »Les Willis«, in der sich junge Frauen in rächende Geister verwandeln und die als Grundlage des Erfolgsballetts »Giselle« allgemeine Bekanntheit erlangte, inspirierte Giacomo Puccini zu seiner ersten Oper überhaupt. Bereits als junger Komponist bewies Puccini hier sein großes dramatisches und melodisches Talent und schuf ein überraschendes Stück Musiktheater, in dem sich sinfonisch gestaltete Orchesterpassagen mit großen solistischen Szenen und Chortableaux abwechseln. Mit »Le Villi« setzt das NTM die Tradition konzertanter Opernaufführungen fort und macht zugleich einen Neuanfang: In der ersten Interimsspielzeit erklingt Puccinis Oper unter der Leitung des neuen Kapellmeisters Salvatore Percacciolo im Mannheimer Rosengarten.
