It all starts and ends at an inn where Hoffmann sits and drinks and dreams. Hoffmann portrays his love for Stella through three different women:
Olympia, Giulietta and Antonia. Each woman has a lesson. Olympia is the dazzlingly beautiful but lifeless doll, who can only
flirt and is not a real human being. Giulietta is at least as beautiful, but flattering and seductive, and she will never be able to limit herself to one man.

Antonia is the fantastic singer who is far too weak to be able to perform her art, but with an enormous urge to sing Hoffmann's songs, an urge that is stronger than to love Hoffmann himself. Love also leads to jealousy, intrigue and lust, and in the end all his dreams are shattered.
