Berlioz wrote the libretto based on Virgil's Aeneid. In music, which was never performed as a whole during the composer's lifetime, he went his own way, so that grand opéra, great choirs and ballets stand alongside new attempts at form. Les troyens are still a challenge for music theater to this day, and yet they are one of the monumental work drafts of the previous century.

Christophe Honoré, who is   staging Les Troyens for the first time at the Bavarian State Opera, is a film director and screenwriter, theater and opera director, author of children's books and novels. Several of his films received nominations in Cannes, at the festivals in Venice and Locarno. He worked on his first productions in music theater under the artistic direction of Serge Dorny in Lyon and for the festival in Aix-en-Provence. In a team with the Italian conductor Daniele Rustioni, chief conductor at the Opéra National de Lyon and since 2019 also chief conductor of the Ulster Orchestra, as well as costume designer Olivier Bériot, he interpreted for Lyon, among other things, Puccini's classic  Tosca  as an aged diva's review of her artistic life. For Berlioz's  Trojans Honoré works for the first time with set designer Katrin Lea Tag, who regularly designs stage spaces for Michael Thalheimer and works with directors Barrie Kosky, Christof Loy, Tatjana Gürbaca and Christiane Pohle.
