"Lefty" is the most famous novel by Nikolai Leskov. Everyone in Russia knows her. Leskov's story provides the richest material for an opera plot. The very plot of the story is a grotesque exaggeration. What's this? A biblical parable, a farce fair myth, an epic tale?.. Bright, juicy, contrasting characters. Russian tsars Alexander I, Nicholas I, Winter Palace, English royal court. Buffoonery and tragedy. Laughter through tears ...
And if you look a little deeper, then there is an obvious artistic opposition of two forms of being - rational British and irrational Russian.
And finally, the main character. An oblique, illiterate craftsman from Tula "with golden hands." It focuses, I think, the most important and most typical features of the Russian national character: original talent, ingenuity, self-irony, indifference to human life, a destructive passion for alcohol. And the eternal Russian theme: power and common people. The lack of demand for a genius in his homeland ...
A voluminous two-act opera was written for the opening of the new stage of the Mariinsky Theater (Mariinsky-2). The musical director and conductor of the performance is Valery Gergiev, who turned sixty this year. My score is dedicated to him.

«Левша» – самая известная повесть Николая Лескова. В России ее знают все. Повесть Лескова предоставляет богатейший материал для оперного сюжета. Уже сама фабула повествования – гротесковое преувеличение. Что это? Библейская притча, ярмарочный балаганный миф, эпическое сказание?.. Яркие, сочные, контрастирующие характеры. Русские цари Александр I, Николай I, Зимний дворец, английский королевский двор. Буффонада и трагедия. Смех сквозь слезы…
А если заглянуть чуть вглубь, то и очевидное художественное противопоставление двух форм бытия – рациональной британской и иррациональной русской.
И наконец, главный герой. Косой неграмотный мастеровой из Тулы «с золотыми руками». В нем сфокусированы, думаю, важнейшие и типичнейшие черты русского национального характера: самобытная одаренность, смекалка, самоирония, безразличие к человеческой жизни, пагубная страсть к алкоголю. И вечная русская тема: власть и простой люд. Невостребованность гения на своей родине…
Объемная двухактная опера написана к открытию новой сцены Мариинского театра (Мариинский-2). Музыкальный руководитель и дирижер спектакля – Валерий Гергиев, которому в этом году исполнилось шестьдесят лет. Моя партитура посвящена ему.
