The name Clemens von Franckenstein means something to few, at most some still think of his work as director, first in Wiesbaden, finally - after the death of Anton von Speidel - from 1912 as director of the Munich Court Opera. Through the appointment of Hans Knappertsbusch and through the design of a repertoire that is still exemplary today, he gave the Bavarian State Opera a brilliant character, who was appointed general director in 1914 until the year of the revolution in 1918 and then again from 1924 until his forced resignation in 1934. The immense importance of his cultural-political achievements is crowned by his own compositional work, which, particularly in the opera LI-TAI-PE, fuses elements of Wagner's neo-romanticism with exotic impressionism influenced by Debussy to create an unmistakable individual language. The opera, which was performed well into the 1940s, marks a high point in recent German music theater history. Which of course no one remembers!
