The romantic character of this recital is unmistakable. With the expansion of the piano art song to include an obbligato solo instrument such as the clarinet, composers such as Franz Schubert and Louis Spohr opened up new possibilities in terms of sound and interpretation, ranging from the description of Biedermeier idylls to concert virtuosity. Robert Schumann's Fantasy Pieces for clarinet and piano also measure the space between inwardness and expressiveness. The piano part in Richard Strauss' songs seems almost orchestral, oscillating between romantic retrospect and hopeful foresight. A very personal evening of songs, which, with songs by Stephanus Le Roux Marais, also pays musical tribute to the South African origins of two of the three artists.
