‘Als ik wist dat je zó’n celloconcert kon componeren, dan had ik er al lang geleden één geschreven’, verzuchtte Johannes Brahms toen hij Dvořáks Celloconcert hoorde. Het is een seizoensopener die alles in zich heeft: heroïek, kracht, poëzie en weemoed. Geen wonder dat het nog altijd een van de meest geliefde werken voor cello en orkest is. Na de pauze dirigeert Viotti de Tweede symfonie van Schumann. In deze stormachtige én melodierijke symfonie probeerde de door ziekte gekwelde Schumann zijn lot te bezweren, door de overwinning op het noodlot in muziek te vatten.
