The love story between Verdi and Shakespeare began with Macbeth , a play considered "one of the best creations in the hand of man." Verdi felt devotion to Shakespeare's play, and this was the first opera on which it was based. From the tragedy, he wanted to achieve "something extraordinary." For Jaume Plensa, occupying Verdi-Shakespeare's Macbeth has been a dream of his youth. When Gerard Mortier asked Salzburg what title he wanted to pursue, he did not hesitate. He must have waited 25 years to make his dream a reality.

The witches prophesy that Macbeth will be the next king of Scotland, and Lady Macbeth pushes fate by assassinating the current king. The witches' predictions lead Macbeth to be bloodthirsty with friends and rivals, until he is alone and furious in the last battle, in which he ends up dying. A duet of dramatic intensity and vocal authority (Luca Salsi / Carlos Alvarez and Sondra Radvanovsky / Anna Pirozzi) to defend the lead roles of the honest general pushed to murder and deceived by the unbridled ambition of his wife .

One of the most fascinating phrases of the whole play - "Sleep no more" - tells us that, with the murder, Macbeth not only killed someone, but also ended up with the possibility of sleeping peacefully for the rest of his life. life. Words that have plagued Jaume Plensa since childhood. The powerful aesthetic and ritual presence of Jaume Plensa, where he will set in motion his entire iconographic universe, is the ideal setting for this dark, theatrical drama full of demonic energy, which will be masterfully directed by the master Josep Pons.
