Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's darkest and bloodiest dramas, which shows the overwhelming rise of the unbridled desire for power. The opera follows the original plot almost exactly, accompanying Macbeth, the victorious general, on the bloody path that leads from the witches' predictions to the acquisition of the throne and keeping it by any means to the inevitable fall. 

 

Verdi was a devoted admirer of Shakespeare's genius, but today we can safely say that his operas equal the dramatic expressive power of his admired predecessor. In Macbeth, like Shakespeare, he “wanted to emphasize the drama in the play… he tried his best to approach the Shakespearean character of fear and pity. Verdi almost completely broke with the usual turns of Italian opera. He didn't even want beautiful singing in Macbeth. He wanted the song to serve the situation, so that the singers could express the storm and spiritual tension raging inside them with their voices. This had never happened before. So it is that Verdi moved in the direction of musical drama in his own way." /Harold C. Schonberg music critic/

 

Almost to the day of our presentation, it will be 170 years since the audience heard Verdi's masterpiece for the first time in Florence. 


Under the direction of Dénes Gulyás, the Pécs Opera Company presents another Verdi-Shakespeare show to its audience. While the gray master composed a swansong comedy opera woven with wisdom and deep humanity from Falstaff, the young Verdi, bursting with energy, reached for this dark blood drama in search of new paths from the templates of bel canto operas. He further polishes and enriches the tools matured in Attila and Nabucco. The role of the heroine of the dramatic coloratura is expanded with a maddened vision scene familiar from the Donizetti and Bellini operas, the chorus can show itself in exciting tasks that pose serious challenges. A Macbeth Shakespeare egyik legsötétebb, legvéresebb drámája, mely a gátlástalan hatalomvágy mindent elsöprő térnyerését mutatja be. Az opera szinte pontosan követi az eredeti cselekményt, végigkísérve Macbethet, a győztes hadvezért azon a véres úton, mely a boszorkányok jóslatától a trón megszerzésén és annak bármilyen eszközzel való megtartásán át a szükségszerű elbukásig vezet. 

 

Verdi elkötelezett csodálója volt Shakespeare zsenialitásának, ám ma már nyugodt szívvel kijelenthetjük, hogy operái drámai kifejezőerőben felérnek csodált elődjéhez. A Macbethben – Shakespeare-hez hasonlóan – „a darabban lévő drámát kívánta hangsúlyozni… minden erejével azon volt, hogy megközelítse a félelem és részvét shakespeare-i jellegét. Verdi majdnem teljesen szakított az olasz opera bevett fordulataival. Még szép énekre sem vágyott a Macbethben. Azt akarta, hogy az ének a szituációt szolgálja, hogy az énekesek a bensőjükben dúló vihart és lelki feszültséget fejezzék ki hangjukkal. Ilyesmire addig nem volt példa. Arról van szó tehát, hogy Verdi a maga módján a zenedráma irányába haladt.” /Harold C. Schonberg zenekritikus/

 

Bemutatónkkal szinte napra pontosan egyidőben lesz 170 éve, hogy a közönség először hallhatta Verdi remekét Firenzében. 


A pécsi operatársulat Gulyás Dénes irányításával újabb Verdi-Shakespeare bemutatóval áll közönsége elé. Míg a Falstaffból az ősz mester bölcs, mély humánummal átszőtt hattyúdal vígoperát komponált, az ifjú, energiáktól duzzadó Verdi a belcanto operák sablonjaiból új utakat keresve nyúlt e sötét vérdrámához. Az Attilában és a Nabuccóban megérlelt eszközöket, tovább csiszolja, gazdagítja. A drámai koloratúra hősnő szerepe bővül egy a Donizetti-, Bellini-operákból megismert őrülés-látomás jelenettel, a kórus, komoly kihívást jelentő izgalmas feladatokban mutathatja meg magát.
