After 20 years, Puccini's "Japanese Tragedy" will be staged in a new production on the stage of the Frankfurt Opera. When it premiered in Milan in 1904, the work was anything but a success. Puccini withdrew the score. It was not until the second version, premiered a few months later in Brescia, that the international triumph of the opera began. However, further revisions followed.

It tells the story of the geisha Cio-cio-san, called Butterfly, from Nagasaki. The American naval officer Pinkerton enters into a relationship with her that he considers to be a non-binding marriage of convenience to which he no longer feels bound after his departure. For Cio-cio-san, however, it is the bond for life. When Pinkerton returns years later and Butterfly realizes that he has meanwhile married another woman, that he even wants to take away their child, she puts an end to her life. In this, she follows the example of her father, who committed the traditional Japanese suicide Seppuku in order to protect his honor.

The music processes Far Eastern influences, which is in contrast to Pinkerton's drawing as a typical American. Whole-tone scales and five-note harmonies as well as exotic instruments create the atmosphere of an idealized Japan from a western perspective. However, Puccini's sense of the expressive melos comes into its own throughout, especially with the title character. Your big outbursts are deeply touching.
