In 1900, the premiere of D. Belasco's play "The Geisha", created on the basis of D. Long's story, took place in London. This performance was seen by Giacomo Puccini, who at that time was actively looking for a plot for a new opera. The touching story of Madame Butterfly won his heart. By 1904, the opera had been written and staged at La Scala. However, she was not successful. G. Puccini wrote to his friend K. Bendy: "My "Butterfly" has not changed from this. It still remains the most heartfelt and most expressive of all my operas! In the end, you will see - victory will be mine!"

The composer was right. The performance, which took place in the same year in Brescia, was a triumphant success. The main part was performed by the Ukrainian singer Salome Krushelnytska. Regarding the stage fate of Madama Butterfly, G. Puccini liked to repeat the prophetic words of the main character of the opera: "Rinnegata ... e felice!" - "Rejected ... and happy!"
