Giacomo Puccini's opera is set in Nagasaki at the beginning of the 20th century. The young geisha Cio-Cio-San, known as "Butterfly", and the American naval lieutenant Pinkerton marry. For him it is a typical temporary marriage in which the man can jump out at any time, for her it is great love. After a few months, Pinkerton left his wife and returned to America. Butterfly has a child from him in his absence and waits for his return every day. One day Pinkerton actually comes back to Japan, but only to take the child back home with her - a terrible shock and deep humiliation for Butterfly. When she realizes that she no longer has a future with Pinkerton, she goes to extremes.

 

Puccini first encountered the partly autobiographical story on a London theater stage. His rudimentary knowledge of English only allowed him to understand a fraction of the dialogues, but the plot opened up to him on the emotional level. The fate of the unhappily loving Japanese woman moved him deeply, and so after the successes of La Bohème and Tosca he set to work on a new opera, his “tragedia giapponese”. With great empathy he draws the portrait of an unconditionally loving woman between dream and longing, hope and disappointment, love and despair. Puccini has Madama Butterfly throughout her lifereferred to as his favorite and best work. There were no limits to his sonic imagination in the synthesis of Italian melody and exotic milieu.
