Madama Butterfly is an opera in three acts (originally two) by giacomo puccini, with a libretto by giuseppe giacosa and luigi illica, defined in the score and libretto as "japanese tragedy".
The premiere took place in Milan, on 17 February 1904 at the Teatro alla Scala.

Puccini was certain that he would enjoy the success that he imagined he rightfully deserved for an opera like “Madama Butterfly”; for this reason he chose (by mutual agreement with Giulio Ricordi, his editor) the stage at La Scala for his premiere. This choice of his was probably given by a desire for revenge towards the Theater which had rejected his "Edgar" in 1889.
Unfortunately, the premiere of the opera ended in a fiasco, an unexpected event after the three Puccini successes Manon Lescaut, La Bohème and Tosca.
