Korláthyék igazi, gazdag grófi család: pazar estélyeket adnak és legalább öt kifejezést ismernek franciául. De a lányuk, Rolla más akar lenni, mint ők: fellázad szülei világa ellen. Szövetségese ebben a Nagymama, aki még tolószékkel is odaér bárhová, ahol valami érdekes történik – kár, hogy Leopold, az inas mindig a legizgalmasabb pillanatban tolja ki a helyszínről -, és aki bármit megtenne egy-egy “jó heccért”, amivel borsot lehet törni az urak orra alá. Rolla, hogy bosszantsa a szüleit, egyik éjjel álruhában kiszökik a vásárba, és megismerkedik egy nagyon kellemes, de nem éppen “komilfó” fiatalemberrel: Baracs István vasútmérnökkel. A fiatalember – mindkettejük nagy csodálkozására – másnap reggel felbukkan a kastélyban, s kiderül, hogy a helyi vasútvonalat tervezi majd. Pixi és Mixi gróf, a Korláthy-kastély állandó vendégei, akik Rolla hozományára pályáznak, sikeresen összeveszítik a szerelmeseket. Rolla és Baracs ettől fogva harcban állnak egymással. Közben a család gróf Eleméry Tasziló kuzin, a befolyásos üzletember – nem mellesleg afrikai oroszlánvadász! – fogadására készül. Csakhogy Eleméry nem érkezik meg időre, és a sértett Baracs kihasználva az alkalmat, remek tréfát eszel ki: beöltözteti Miskát, a lovászfiút Tasziló grófnak. Miska nagyszerűen érzi magát az új szerepben, még menyasszonyát, Marcsát se hajlandó megismerni, annyira beleéli magát a játékba. Baracs hiába próbálja leállítani, nem sikerül: rémülten látja, hogy teremtménye elszabadult. A sértett hölgyek közben viszont-tréfával állnak elő: Rolla beöltözteti Marcsát Eleméry néger feleségének. Lassan senki sem az már, mint akinek mondja magát – amikor belép az igazi Eleméry gróf, igazi néger feleségével. Ekkor persze már nem hisznek nekik – miért pont ők lennének igaziak? -, teljes a káosz. “Ki kicsoda és kinek álcázta magát?” – üvölti Korláthy gróf puskával a kezében. – Persze hamarosan minden kiderül, és mindenki megtalálja a párját

The Korláthys are a real, rich family of counts: they give lavish evenings and know at least five expressions in French. But their daughter Rolla wants to be different from them: she rebels against her parents' world. His ally in this is Grandmother, who even with a wheelchair gets to wherever something interesting is happening - it's a shame that Leopold, the butler, always pushes her out of the scene at the most exciting moment - and who would do anything for a "good joke" that can be used to break pepper under the noses of the gentlemen. To annoy her parents, Rolla sneaks out to the fair one night in disguise and meets a very pleasant, but not exactly "cool" young man: railway engineer István Baracs. The young man - to the great surprise of both of them - turns up at the castle the next morning, and it turns out that he will be planning the local railway line. Counts Pixi and Mixi, permanent guests of Korláthy Castle, who bid for Rolla's dowry, successfully make the lovers quarrel. Rolla and Baracs have been fighting each other ever since. Meanwhile, the family's cousin Count Eleméry Tasziló, the influential businessman - not to mention an African lion hunter! - is preparing to receive. However, Eléméry does not arrive on time, and the offended Baracs takes advantage of the opportunity to play a great joke: he dresses Miska, the horseman, as Count Tasziló. Miska feels great in her new role, she doesn't even want to meet her fiancee Marcsa, she gets so involved in the game. Baracs tries in vain to stop it, but fails: he is horrified to see that his creature has escaped. Meanwhile, the offended ladies come up with a joke: Rolla dresses up Marcsa as Eléméry's negro wife. Slowly, no one is who they say they are anymore - when the real Count Eleméry enters with his real negro wife. Then, of course, they no longer believe them - why would they be real? - complete chaos. "Who is who and who has he disguised himself as?" - roars Count Korláthy with a rifle in his hand. "Of course, everything will be revealed soon, and everyone will find their match."
