At the Teatro Regio in Turin, on February 1, 1893, eight days before  Falstaff 's debut  at La Scala, Puccini achieved his first success with  Manon Lescaut . The choice of the theme was a risk, given that the successful novel by Abbot Prévost had already been successfully transformed into an opera by Massenet nine years earlier. But the thirty-five-year-old Puccini was already a conscious composer and was not afraid of confrontation: "Massenet feels it as a Frenchman - he said about the subject -, with face powder and minuets, I feel it as an Italian, with desperate passion". And the facts proved him right. The year after  Manon it also triumphed at Covent Garden in London and, reviewing it, George Bernard Shaw wrote: "It seems to me that Puccini, more than any other of his rival, is Verdi's most likely heir." Prophetic judgment, because Puccini, from  Manon  onwards, will be precisely the most representative composer of Italian and European opera after Verdi. This  Manon , directed by Davide Livermore, will speak above all to today's audience, as if it were a film, pushing us to think and reflect on contemporaneity: here Manon in fact, is an outcast, a migrant who has not made it.

Al Teatro Regio di Torino, il 1 febbraio 1893, otto giorni prima del debutto di Falstaff alla Scala, Puccini raggiungeva il suo primo successo con Manon Lescaut. La scelta del tema era un rischio, dato che il fortunato romanzo dell’abate Prévost era già stato trasformato in opera da Massenet, con successo, nove anni prima. Ma il trentacinquenne Puccini era già un compositore consapevole e non temeva il confronto: «Massenet lo sente da francese – disse a proposito del soggetto –, con la cipria e i minuetti, io lo sento da italiano, con passione disperata». E i fatti gli diedero ragione. L’anno dopo Manon trionfò anche al Covent Garden di Londra e, recensendola, George Bernard Shaw scrisse: «Puccini mi sembra che, più di qualsiasi altro suo rivale, sia il più probabile erede di Verdi». Giudizio profetico, perché Puccini, da Manon in poi, sarà appunto il compositore più rappresentativo dell’opera italiana, ed europea, dopo Verdi. Questa Manon, per la regia di Davide Livermore, parlerà soprattutto al pubblico di oggi, come se fosse un film, spingendoci a pensare e a riflettere sulla contemporaneità: qui Manon infatti, è un’emarginata, una migrante che non ce l’ha fatta.
