Many Many Women  by Petr Kotík is an extensive vocal composition from 1975-78 based on the text of Gertrude Stein, her novel-short story of the same name published in Paris in 1910. The text was published as part of the book  GMP   – Gertrude, Mattis, Piccasso and was republished in 1972 by Dick Higgins at his Something Else Press. Kotík used the entire text, which determined the length of the song. Inspired by the close collaboration with composer and singer Julius Eastman, Kotík began to compose a number of compositions for voice in 1971, from the very first composition Kotík used Gertrude Stein's lyrics. Many Many Women (1975–78) is the culmination of this series of compositions. It is a continuous singing and playing of instruments: two sopranos, countertenor, tenor, bass baritone, bass, 2 flutes, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones. Twelve musicians – singers and instrumentalists – play and sing continuously for six hours (although the piece can be performed in a shorter version with a smaller cast). The poetic nature of the text evokes ideas and images that can lead to a performance. The performance at the NODO festival will be the first stage performance.

Kotík's music is not based on a narrative form and does not have a dramatic character. As with other composers of the second half of the 20th century, instead of a narrative dramatic form, it is a situation and its variations without a clear beginning or end. Instead of this narrative form - which is anchored in the music by sonata form - there is an almost Beckettian "situation": a concept that John Cage, La Monte Young, Morton Feldman and others have pioneered in their works since the early 1950s. Feldman put it succinctly in his commentary on Beckett's libretto for his opera Neither (1977):  “The continuity of the text makes it seem as if each line is about something else. It is not about anything else, there is no change involved. It's about going deeper and deeper into one thought.”         

With their improvised beginnings, the singers and musicians intuitively "complete"  Many Many Women  during the performance, with configurations of individual, independent beginnings. The 378-page score is divided into 173 parts. Although the form of the composition is free flowing, the notation of the composition is exact in the traditional way. 

Although  Petr Kotík is the composer considered self-taught, he underwent rigorous training both in Prague and at the Vienna Academy of Music. In Prague, he attended private lessons with Jan Rychlík, and his admiration for him accompanies him throughout his life (similar to Philip Glass's admiration for Nadia Boulanger). Rychlík was far ahead of his time with his understanding of composition. At the end of the fifties, he began to use rhythmic shifts (phase music), based on the principle of African drumming, typical of Steve Reich's music more than ten years later. Rychlík was ahead of his time in understanding the importance of the improvisational characteristics of musical expression as it was practiced until the middle of the 19th century. It is possible that this unconventional openness, together with the views of John Cage, which Kotík met at the age of eighteen, influenced the composer's way of musical thinking in his early days.

Many Many Women Petra Kotíka je rozsáhlá vokální skladba z let 1975–78 na text Gertrudy Stein, jejího stejnojmenného románu-povídky vydaného v Paříži roku 1910. Ten text vyšel jako část knihy G.M.P.  – Gertruda, Mattise, Piccasso a roku 1972 znovu knihu vydal Dick Higgins ve svém nakladatelství Something Else Press. Kotík použil celý text, což určilo délku skladby. Inspirován úzkou spoluprací se skladatelem a zpěvákem Juliusem Eastmanem, začal Kotík roku 1971 komponovat řadu kompozic pro hlas, hned od první skladby použil Kotík texty Gertrudy Stein. Many Many Women (1975–78) je vyvrcholením této série skladeb. Jedná se o kontinuální zpěv a hru na nástroje: dva soprány, kontratenor, tenor, basbaryton, bas, 2 flétny, 2 trubky, 2 trombóny. Dvanáct hudebníků – zpěváci a instrumentalisté – hrají a zpívají nepřerušeně šest hodin (i když lze skladbu provozovat v kratší verzi s menším obsazením). Poetický charakter textu vyvolává představy a obrazy, které mohou vést k inscenaci. Provedení na NODO festivalu bude prvním scénickým provedením.

Kotíkova hudba se nezakládá na narativní formě a nemá dramatický charakter. Jako u dalších skladatelů druhé poloviny 20. století, se namísto narativní dramatické formy jedná o situaci a její variace bez zřetelného začátku nebo konce. Namísto této narativní formy – ta je v hudbě zakotvena sonátovou formou – je zde téměř Beckettovská „situace“: koncept, který od počátku padesátých let razili ve svých dílech John Cage, La Monte Young, Morton Feldman a další. Feldman to výstižně vyjádřil v komentáři k libretu od Becketta pro svou operu Neither (1977): „Kontinuita textu působí, jako by se na každé řádce jednalo o něco jiného. O nic jiného se nejedná, o žádné změny tu nejde. Jde o to, vstupovat hlouběji a hlouběji do jedné myšlenky.“         

Svými improvizovanými nástupy zpěváci a hudebníci intuitivně „dotvářejí“ Many Many Women v průběhu provedení, a to konfiguracemi individuálních, na sobě nezávislých nástupů. Partitura o 378 stranách je rozdělena na 173 částí. I když forma skladby má volný průběh, zápis kompozice je tradičním způsobem exaktní. 

Ačkoliv jako skladatel je Petr Kotík považován za samouka, prošel rigorózním tréninkem jak v Praze, tak na vídeňské Akademie für Musik. V Praze navštěvoval soukromé hodiny u Jana Rychlíka a obdiv k němu ho doprovází po celý život (podobně jako obdiv Philipa Glasse k Nadie Boulanger). Rychlík svým chápáním kompozice daleko předčil svou dobu. Koncem padesátých let začal využívat rytmické posuny (phase music), založené na principu afrického bubnování, typické pro hudbu Steva Reicha o více než deset let později. Rychlík rozuměl v předstihu své doby významu improvizační charakteristiky hudebního projevu tak, jak byl praktikován do poloviny 19.století. Je možné, že tato nekonvenční otevřenost, společně s názory Johna Cage, se kterými se Kotík setkal už ve svých osmnácti letech, ovlivnily způsob skladatelova hudebního myšlení v jeho začátcích.
